Zanzibar Travel Insurance

Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance for Zanzibar

As of October 1, 2024, all foreign visitors going to Zanzibar are required to have travel insurance issued by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) to be allowed entry, even if you already have international travel insurance.

This insurance is separate from any visa and checked at border control.

Tanzania mainland currently does not require this mandatory insurance — it applies only to Zanzibar.

Typical charges for the mandatory inbound travel insurance are:

USD 44 USD per adult (18+)

USD 22 USD for children aged ~3–17

Free for children under ~3

Valid up to 92 days — covers your entire stay in Zanzibar.

The policy generally offers:

Emergency medical treatment & hospitalization

Medical evacuation or repatriation

Accidents

Baggage loss / theft / delay

Personal liability and legal assistance

Some plans may include limited trip delay compensation.

Note: The exact benefits can vary slightly depending on updates, so always check the latest terms on the official portal.

You must purchase this insurance before arrival to avoid issues at immigration — airlines and border officials often check it before boarding or entry.

The official way to buy it is:

Go to the official Zanzibar tourism insurance portal: visitzanzibar.go.tz/insurance.

Enter your passport, travel dates, and personal info.

Pay the fee online (credit/debit or local mobile payments generally accepted).

You’ll receive a policy confirmation with a QR code by email.

Save and print or carry a digital copy — it’s required at immigration when entering Zanzibar.

✔ If the online system has issues, some travelers report that you can complete your purchase on arrival at the airport or ferry terminal, but this may cause delays, so purchasing ahead of time is best.

💡 Tips Before You Travel

Carry both your insurance QR code/document and your visa/eVisa confirmation — both are checked on arrival.

The mandatory ZIC policy offers basic protection, but many travelers also buy international travel insurance (from a private provider) for additional benefits such as:

Higher medical coverage limits

Trip cancellation/interruption

Flight delay coverage

Higher baggage protection

Even with the Zanzibar policy, private travel insurance can provide broader safety and better value for money.
